What We Do / Mack Alumni Today
A spring newsletter is mailed to every Mack graduate for whom we have an address and name change. Notably missing are name changes and addresses for members of the classes of 1971A, 1971B, 1972, 1973 and 1974.
An Annual Spring Reunion Dinner is held on the first Friday in June each year - the regular Annual Meeting of the Association is held at this time. Membership fees are $15.00 annually and must be paid by the time of the Annual Meeting. A pot-luck supper is held on the 2nd Wednesday in November - details are included in the fall newsletter which is sent to paid up members. In 1974 we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of our school and in 1999, the 125th.
In 2001 we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the founding of our Alumni Association. Over 350 graduates attended this event.
Recognition of this historical event was announced by St. Catharines MP Walt Lastewka (Liberal) at the May 30, 2001, sitting of the House of Commons - this information is documented in the Hansard (official report) for that day.
Through the years we have had bazaars, card parties, etc. to raise money, but now we rely on funds received with membership fees, private donations, the sale of commemorative objects (ie. Charms, aprons, cook books, hasty notes, letter openers) and draws held at our Annual Dinner. We have given thousands of dollars for specialized equipment to the St. Catharines General Hospital.
In the year 2000 we gave $5,000 towards a Special Care Garden at Linhaven Home for the Aged in St. Catharines. A donation is forwarded to the St..Catharines General Hospital in memory of each deceased Mack graduate.
To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Alumni, two scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded annually to two people who are enrolled as full-time students in a B.Sc. Nursing Degree program. The individuals must be either Mack graduates or direct descendents of Mack graduates. Further information is available by contacting the Alumni Association.
The purpose of the Alumni Association is to maintain unity within the Alumni; interest in the St. Catharines Genreal Hospital (now part of the Niagara Health System- St. Catharines Genreal Site); the preservation of the history of the Mack Schools of Nursing; and to advance interest in the profession of nursing.
